Saybrook Country Barn

We were contacted by a graphic designer from the Saybrook Country Barn, Old Saybrook CT wanting to discuss replacing some existing exterior signs and produce a couple of new ones. They desire was to keep with the current theme of the shops and have the signs carved with gold-leaf lettering. The goal is to have the signs attract customers and guide them to the products being sold.

In the pictures below you can see the finished signs on the buildings. All but one is mounted directly to the building. The one is mounted to the roof with custom roof brackets. The gold leaf lettering on the black background results in a striking sign. Another advantage to gold-leaf is its ability to stand up to the elements over time. It will look good for years to come.

Established in 1977, the Saybrook Country Barn was started with the vision of opening a unique home furnishings store. As their business grew they continued to add buildings to accommodate more furniture showrooms and space for the hardware shop, office and warehouse. To kick this project off we set up a meeting with the Saybrook Country Barn designer to discuss the details, take some site photos and measurements. Back in the studio we used the photos of the existing signs to design the shape of the new ones. With the shape and font established we put together proofs for each sign in its location.

Once we had agreement on the final designs and sizes we began production. The decision was made to produce these signs out of high-density urethane. Those going against the building were made from 1” thick and the roof sign was 1 1/2” thick, for additional strength to deal with the elements. Studs were used to mount the signs to the buildings which eliminated any visible fasteners in the front face of the sign. The roof sign was attached using custom aluminum brackets painted black so they blended in with the sign. Care was taken to make sure the penetrations in the roof were properly sealed to prevent leaking.

In addition, sufficient space was left below so no debris collects behind the sign over time.
